Out of nowhere on the morning of Thursday, August 14, the Kansas City Chiefs and their fans received massive Rashee Rice suspension news courtesy of ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.

“ESPN sources: Chiefs WR Rashee Rice is expected to have his disciplinary hearing with the NFL on Tuesday, Sept 30 in New York,” Schefter reported on X. “This means that Rice now is likely to be able to play the first four weeks of this season before any potential discipline is imposed for his role in a multi-car crash in Dallas during the 2024 offseason.”

In a follow-up post, Schefter then clarified: “With Rashee Rice’s hearing now on track for Sept. 30, this would make him eligible to play the first four weeks of the season with games against the [Los Angeles] Chargers in Brazil, the [Philadelphia] Eagles, at the [New York] Giants and the [Baltimore] Ravens.”

After Rice’s court sentencing was announced on July 17, many assumed the Chiefs star would be suspended to start the 2025 NFL season. However, if Schefter’s reporting is accurate, that is no longer the case.

This bombshell from Schefter changes a lot about the way the Chiefs will view the next couple of weeks and months.

For starters, if Rice isn’t suspended to start the 2025 season, that means he’ll be on the 53-man roster. As a result, that also means another wide receiver likely won’t survive the cutdown at the tail end of the preseason.

Things just got a whole lot trickier for bubble candidates like Tyquan Thornton, Skyy Moore, Nikko Remigio, Jason Brownlee, and the collection of KC undrafted prospects at wide receiver.

Number two, if Rice isn’t suspended Weeks 1 through 4, that would imply he’ll be suspended at a later date this season. Depending on the length of said suspension, the Chiefs could be without their top playmaker for matchups that they did not initially anticipate.

Looking at the Kansas City schedule starting in Week 5 — after the scheduled disciplinary hearing date — the Chiefs face the Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Las Vegas Raiders, Washington Commanders and Buffalo Bills leading up to a Week 10 bye.

It’s still unclear how long Rice will miss, assuming he’s suspended by the NFL league office this season, and the exact week in which his suspension will begin.

Finally, from a global and ratings perspective, the Chiefs look like they will have Rice for their season opener in Brazil. As well as their home opener at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 2 — which also just so happens to be a Super Bowl rematch.

Perhaps the NFL had that in mind when they scheduled this hearing date?
