The Green Bay Packers have no shortage of talent capable of competing for a Super Bowl championship. What they have been searching for, however, is the right leadership to unlock that potential.
They believe they may have found it.
The Packers have made a significant defensive move by hiring Jonathan Gannon, the former defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles and former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, as their new defensive coordinator.

Gannon was dismissed by Arizona on January 6 following a disastrous 2025 season that ended with a 3–14 record. Across three seasons with the Cardinals, he compiled a 15–36 record and never reached the playoffs.
Green Bay was forced into the search after Jeff Hafley departed to become the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, leaving a major vacancy on the defensive staff.
“Sources say the Packers are hiring former Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon as their defensive coordinator,” ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported.
Before his stint in Arizona, Gannon served as Philadelphia’s defensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022 and helped lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl following the 2022 season.

A Head Coaching Tenure Defined by Missteps
While Gannon has proven success as a coordinator, his time as a head coach was marked by repeated setbacks.
“He never made the playoffs and never finished higher than third in the NFC West,” ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss wrote. “Arizona went 4–13 in 2023 and 8–9 the following season. Ownership and the front office moved quickly once the season ended.”
Controversy surrounded Gannon even before he coached his first game in Arizona. One incident, in particular, may have indirectly affected the Eagles’ Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Cardinals were penalized for having impermissible contact with Gannon during the week leading up to the Super Bowl, forcing the franchise to swap third-round draft picks with Philadelphia and pay a fine.
Philadelphia ultimately lost the Super Bowl 38–35, and questions lingered about whether distractions off the field may have contributed to missed details in preparation.
Sideline Incident and a $100,000 Fine
Tensions reached a breaking point in Week 5 when Gannon was involved in a heated sideline confrontation with running back Emari Demercado during a loss to the Tennessee Titans.
A viral video showed Gannon shouting at Demercado after a fumble at the goal line on a 72-yard run. At one point, Gannon appeared to shove Demercado’s arm as the player walked away.
The turnover erased what would have been a commanding 28–6 lead late in the fourth quarter. Tennessee rallied to win 22–21. The Cardinals later fined Gannon $100,000 for the incident.
“The moment Gannon lost his composure on the sideline, his tenure in Arizona was effectively over,” analyst Josh Gitt wrote. “From that point on, he lost the locker room, which was reflected in the team’s nine-game losing streak to close the season.”
A Fresh Start in Green Bay
Now in Green Bay, Jonathan Gannon is being given a chance to reset his career in a role where he has historically thrived. Surrounded by a talented Packers roster already positioned for playoff success, this move represents a pivotal moment for both Gannon and the franchise.
For Green Bay, it’s a calculated gamble aimed at elevating a championship-ready roster.
For Gannon, it may be his final opportunity to redefine his NFL legacy.
