Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Lucas Niang, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, has signed a new deal with the Washington Commanders to join them at training camp.
The Chiefs selected Niang in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft, highly touted out of TCU, with hopes of him becoming the starting offensive tackle of the future. He opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns and was named the starting right tackle for the 2021 season, but was limited due to various injuries. In Week 17, while at left tackle, he suffered a torn patellar tendon, ending his year.

From 2022 to 2024, Niang floated between the reserve/PUP (physically unable to perform) list and practice squad for the remainder of his Chiefs career. He was a member of both the Super Bowl LVII and Super Bowl LVIII teams but wasn’t active.
Niang will battle for a chance to make the Commanders in camp and continue his NFL career after several setbacks.
