Xavier Worthy’s injury status changed quickly after 24 hours of observation, as NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver is “in the NFL’s concussion protocol” after banging his head at training camp on July 29.

Rapoport noted in his post that this Worthy update came “per coach Andy Reid” and the Chiefs.

This report was also confirmed by Arrowhead Pride beat writer Pete Sweeney — among others — who relayed: “The Chiefs say Xavier Worthy is in concussion protocol.”

Reid was not scheduled to address the media on July 30, so there was no explanation beyond that from Kansas City.

On July 29, Reid shrugged off Worthy’s head injury after practice, so the Chiefs appeared to be unaware of this concussion, at least initially.

“Xavier [Worthy] banged his head,” Reid told reporters during the injury rundown.

Reid was not asked to elaborate on Worthy’s injury status during the July 29 presser, most likely because he reentered practice after being checked out in the medical tent.

ESPN beat reporter Nate Taylor summarized the events in real-time below:

“The 1st team rep for the Chiefs today was a deep pass from Patrick Mahomes to Xavier Worthy, who tried to make a diving, outstretched catch. Worthy left the field with a trainer & is being evaluated in the medical tent at the moment of this tweet.”

Followed by: “Patrick Mahomes just checked on Xavier Worthy in the medical tent. Mahomes didn’t stay long. He dapped up Worthy.”

And then: “Xavier Worthy is back with his teammates with his helmet in his hands.”

After practice, Sweeney also stated that “WR Xavier Worthy looked like he banged his head on the first play of practice, but returned after he was evaluated in the tent.”

It’s currently unclear how much time Worthy could miss due to this head injury.

The Chiefs were down three wide receivers on Wednesday, according to Sweeney. One of them was Worthy, and the other two WR injuries occurred on July 29, too.

Veteran Hollywood Brown is currently working through an ankle injury.

FOX Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported the following on what is thought to be a minor injury for Brown after practice on Tuesday:

“Sources: Chiefs WR Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown, who left practice on a cart with a lower leg injury, avoided anything serious and is expected to be back on the field as early as tomorrow.”

Although Brown did not retake the field on July 30, which Schultz noted was a possibility, the Chiefs could simply be playing it safe, considering Brown’s injury history. So, his absence on Wednesday is not necessarily a cause for concern just yet.

Veteran draft pick Skyy Moore is also dealing with a “hamstring” injury. He sat out Wednesday’s practice after being carted inside on Tuesday.

As a reminder, being carted off during training camp is a lot different than being carted off during an actual game. At camp, teams tend to use the cart for all situations, while they are only utilized for major injuries during an NFL outing.

Reid did not provide a timetable for Brown or Moore as they get themselves healthy enough to practice again.
