Fans of the Dallas Cowboys would say that the Logan Wilson trade was a no-risk situation, as they only had to trade a seventh-round pick to get the former Bengals linebacker.

As one of the worst defenses in the NFL, the Cowboys had to find an answer to stop the bleeding a linebacker. The past two games haven’t been great for Dak Prescott, but the offense has still been playing out of its mind this season by becoming only the third team in NFL history to score at least 40 points in each of its first three home games. With that said, the trade deadline marked a perfect time to clean house for one of the Cowboys’ linebackers.1

The Wilson trade should mark the end of one of Matt Eberflus’ failed experiments, and it’s something fans will love to see.

Logan Wilson trade should mark the end of Jack Sanborn with the Cowboys

Jack Sanborn and Eberflus both made the trek to Dallas from Chicago. Fans thought that he would be someone to lead the defense thanks to his experience with Eberflus, but that has failed miserably.

Sanborn hasn’t been great at all in defending the pass or run, and he’s also missed tackles on top of all that. If there were any high expectations for Sanborn, then that quickly came to an end with a 47.5 Pro Football Focus grade against the New York Giants.

One of his best plays this year was breaking up a pass in the end zone late in overtime against Green Bay. Other than that, there hasn’t been much to look forward to.

It’s almost not even fair to compare Sanborn to Wilson, as Wilson has been a consistent tackler with the Bengals and led the team in that category from 2021-23. Kenneth Murray Jr. hasn’t been great either, but it might not even matter with DeMarvion Overshown set to return from injury soon. A linebacker tandem of Wilson and Overshown would be a huge upgrade over what we’ve seen thus far.

Sanborn is on injured reserve anyway with a groin injury, and his earliest possible return is against the Detroit Lions. He might as well forget about that, with the Lions having some of the best weapons in every offensive position.

The Cowboys’ defense this year has been so bad to the point where cleaning house is necessary, and unfortunately, Sanborn has to be one of those guys. Whether or not Jerry Jones wants to keep Eberflus will be decided after the season, but it’s safe to say that Sanborn’s time with Dallas is all but over at this point.
