Smart move: New trade package helps Chiefs avoid a repeat of the Tyreek Hill ‘headache’.

The Kansas City Chiefs don’t have to make a big splash, but if they wanted to they don’t have to run it back with Tyreek Hill; been there, done that. The Miami Dolphins have shown Hill is still a headache and that’s the last thing the Chiefs need. They need somebody that’s going to come in, not ask for a whole lot and contribute to a young receiver room.

Rashee Rice is still being investigated by the NFL for personal conduct issues. If he ultimately gets suspended for his involvement in a multi-car crash, the Chiefs can’t afford to be complacent with their current receiver room. Xavier Worthy is still a long term project in their eyes, Hollywood Brown is an injury liability and JuJu Smith-Schuster isn’t quite what he was in Pittsburgh.

But imagine if they could poach a disgruntled Terry McLaurin off the Washington Commanders or land Romeo Doubs and help the Green Bay Packers thin out a deep receiver room. Either of those options are better than going back to Hill.

Tyreek Hill: Chiefs WR denies 2014 assault in recorded conversation

The Washington Commanders probably want to move on from the McLaurin drama more than anything, which is why the Chiefs should swoop in to take him off their hands while he wouldn’t yield a massive haul. Though the Commanders would probably want something of significance, it does them no good to go into the season with McLaurin still sitting out.

The Chiefs could offer up Smith-Schuster and some picks, they could potentially send Skyy Moore and some picks or offer a slew of picks to land McLaurin in a deal with the Commanders. Washington could add another EDGE rusher next to Von Miller.

Charles Omenihu could be a player that could be part of the deal if the Commanders see enough value in him. Omenihu missed the bulk of last year due to injury so that may be something that keeps them from looking at him as part of the deal. But in 2023 he did have a career year, recording seven sacks.

It’s probably more likely a defensive back is asked for in return, though the Chiefs are already thin there and may not be interested in parting ways with Trent McDuffie or Jaylen Watson. The Commanders receiver room isn’t bad, but relying exclusively on Deebo Samuel without McLaurin is a risk.

The Commanders probably aren’t interested in dealing with the Chiefs, but if I’m Kansas City, I’m giving them a deal they can’t refuse. If it means parting with a young star in the receiver room or a veteran EDGE rusher or even a defensive back, you have to think about it. Because with McLaurin, the Chiefs are certainly headed back to the Super Bowl.
